Liquid BioCell collagen is a chicken-cartilage-derived matrix of hydrolyzed type II collagen peptides, hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulfate used in several liquid supplements now sold by Shaklee. Small clinical trials suggest possible benefits for skin appearance and joint symptoms, but the evidence is limited and partly industry-funded. The current formulas also differ substantially, so the best choice depends more on ingredients, diet preferences and budget than on marketing claims.

Important 2026 change: Modere ceased operating in 2025. Shaklee acquired substantially all of Modere’s business and later announced an exclusive license for Liquid BioCell Collagen. This update separates three questions that are often blurred together: what the BioCell Collagen ingredient is, what is actually inside the current Liquid BioCell finished products, and what human studies can reasonably tell us about outcomes. We checked Shaklee’s current U.S. product pages and 2025–2026 company announcements, then compared those claims with peer-reviewed BioCell studies, broader collagen meta-analyses and FDA supplement guidance.

We did not independently test these products, verify every batch, or identify a reliable direct Amazon.com U.S. listing for each current formula. Because the project standard is not to invent ASINs or availability, the Amazon fields are intentionally left as publisher-verification placeholders.

What is Liquid BioCell collagen?

Liquid BioCell is not simply a bottle of generic collagen peptides. Its core Collagen/HA Matrix combines hydrolyzed type II collagen peptides, hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulfate derived from chicken cartilage. Current Shaklee pages for Pure, Beauty and Life describe the same core Liquid BioCell ingredient, while each finished formula adds different secondary ingredients.

Ingredient vs. finished product: Published studies on BioCell Collagen do not automatically prove that every extra ingredient in Life, Beauty or Life+ adds a clinical benefit, nor do they establish that the newest finished formula is superior to the older ones. Liquid BioCell Life+, Pure, Beauty and Life compared

Do not assume “more ingredients” means “more evidence.” Pure is easier to evaluate because it stays closer to the core matrix. Beauty and Life add targeted extras, while Life+ is the newest and most complex formula. Choose based on the label and your priorities, not on the idea that the longest ingredient list must work best.

Does Liquid BioCell collagen really work?

The most defensible answer is “possibly for some outcomes, but the evidence is not strong enough for guarantees.” BioCell Collagen has randomized placebo-controlled human trials for skin and joint outcomes, yet the studies are relatively small and industry-funded. Broader collagen research is also mixed once study quality and funding are taken into account.

What did the skin study find?

A 12-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial included 128 women aged 39–59. Participants received 500 mg of BioCell Collagen twice daily or placebo. The BioCell group showed statistically significant changes in several measures, including facial lines/wrinkles, crow’s-feet lines, elasticity and measured cutaneous collagen content. However, there was no difference in skin surface water content or retention, and the study was funded by BioCell Technology.

What did the joint study find?

An earlier randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial studied 80 adults with physician-verified hip or knee osteoarthritis. Participants received 2 g/day of BioCell Collagen or placebo for 70 days. The BioCell group had statistically significant improvements in pain and WOMAC scores at measured time points. The treatment group’s tolerability was comparable with placebo, but the study was funded by BioCell Technology and should not be read as evidence that Liquid BioCell is an FDA-approved arthritis treatment.

What does the broader collagen research say?

The wider evidence base is not one-sided. A 2023 meta-analysis of 26 randomized trials involving 1,721 participants found improvements in skin hydration and elasticity with hydrolyzed collagen overall, while acknowledging bias and the need for larger trials. A newer 2025 meta-analysis of 23 randomized trials found overall improvements when all studies were pooled, but no significant benefit for hydration, elasticity or wrinkles in non-industry-funded studies; high-quality studies also did not show significant effects across the evaluated outcomes.

Evidence bottom line: Collagen supplements may help some people, and BioCell has human trials worth considering. But claims such as “reverses aging,” “rebuilds cartilage,” “cures hair loss,” “boosts metabolism,” or guarantees visible results within a fixed number of weeks go beyond what these studies establish.

Is Liquid BioCell better than collagen powder?

There is no simple evidence-based reason to say liquid collagen is automatically better than powder just because it is liquid. The BioCell studies test a specific hydrolyzed chicken-cartilage ingredient, not a head-to-head question of liquid versus powder delivery. A powder may be less expensive per gram and easier to add to food, while Liquid BioCell offers a pre-mixed matrix that also includes hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulfate.

If your priority is convenience and you like the Liquid BioCell ingredient combination, the liquid format may make sense. How long does a bottle of Liquid BioCell last?

Current Shaklee directions for Life, Pure and Beauty say to take 1 tablespoon twice daily. At 30 mL per day, a 450 mL bottle works out to about 15 days, not a full month. Shaklee’s Life+ page likewise states that two bottles provide about a month’s supply. Always use the current label because package sizes and directions can change.

Budget for the serving schedule, not just the bottle price. A single bottle can look comparable to other premium supplements until you account for twice-daily dosing. Compare monthly cost, not only the price of one bottle.

Is Liquid BioCell safe? Side effects and cautions

Short clinical studies of the BioCell ingredient reported generally good tolerability, but that does not make every Liquid BioCell formula risk-free for every person. The core ingredient is derived from chicken cartilage, and Life, Beauty and Life+ contain additional plant extracts or nutrients that may matter for individual allergies, health conditions or medications.

• Not vegan or vegetarian: the Liquid BioCell Collagen/HA Matrix is made from chicken cartilage.
• Check the complete label: Beauty, Life and Life+ contain many ingredients beyond collagen, so do not judge suitability from the words “collagen” or “natural” alone.
• Do not treat supplement marketing as FDA approval: FDA does not approve dietary supplements for safety and effectiveness before they are marketed.
